In the quiet hours of a late July night in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the life of a young man was tragically cut short. Travis Polk, a 21-year-old male, was found shot in the early morning hours of Friday, July 25, 2014. The discovery was made in the front yard of a residence on Mission Drive, where Polk was found sitting in a lawn chair, having sustained a gunshot wound to his upper torso.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene, and Polk was quickly transported to a local
hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, his injuries proved to be fatal, and he succumbed to the gunshot wound later that same day. The incident was classified as a homicide by the Baton Rouge Police Department, prompting an immediate and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
As detectives began to piece together the events of that night, they canvassed the neighborhood for witnesses and any potential leads that might shed light on a motive or identify those responsible for Polk's death. The initial investigation suggested that the shooting was not a random act of violence, with authorities believing it may have stemmed from an ongoing dispute.
In the days following the shooting, law enforcement officials identified two individuals as persons of interest in the case. Warrants were issued for the arrest of Thadius D. Butler, 23, and Rodney P. Law, 26, both of Baton Rouge. The warrants charged them with first-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon. The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force actively sought to locate and apprehend both suspects.
The search for the two men continued for several months. In October 2014, Thadius Butler was apprehended, and in February of the following year, Rodney Law was also taken into custody, bringing a significant development to the investigation into Travis Polk's murder. Both men faced the serious charges brought against them in connection with the fatal shooting.
