In the tight-knit community of Marrero, Louisiana, the evening of October 8, 2014, was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of 26-year-old Marquis Thomas. An African American male, Thomas was standing outside a home with his grandmother when the sound of gunfire suddenly erupted. In a final, selfless act, he managed to push his grandmother out of the path of the bullets, saving her from harm but tragically sacrificing his own life in the process.
