On an evening in April 2015, a confrontation in New Sarpy, Louisiana, turned deadly, leading to the death of 28-year-old Warren Sanders. The incident, which marked the first homicide of the year in St. Charles Parish, unfolded around 9 p.m. on April 18 in the 800 block of East Terrace Street. According to witness accounts, Sanders was involved in a heated argument with 22-year-old Sidney K. Smith, a resident of New Sarpy.
The dispute reportedly arose from Sanders' alleged interest in Smith's girlfriend.
The verbal altercation escalated tragically when Smith produced a small-caliber weapon and fired multiple shots, striking Sanders in the abdomen and head. Law enforcement officers arriving at the scene discovered Sanders unresponsive in a ditch; he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Smith fled the area, prompting the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office to issue a public alert, identifying him as a murder suspect and cautioning that he should be considered armed and dangerous.
The search for Sidney K. Smith concluded within 24 hours when he voluntarily surrendered to authorities at the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center. He was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Smith, who had a prior conviction for disturbing the peace, was held on a $500,000 bond. The case proceeded through the legal system, and in November 2016, a trial was held. Following the presentation of evidence and testimony, Sidney Smith was convicted of manslaughter in connection with the shooting death of Warren Sanders. His sentencing was scheduled for December of the same year, following a court-ordered pre-sentence investigation.
