On a December evening in New Orleans, a dispute over a parking spot escalated into a fatal encounter that claimed the life of 24-year-old Daniel Millon. The incident unfolded on December 28, 2015, at the Hidden Lake Apartments in the 7000 block of Martin Drive. Millon and his friend, Vernon Lewis, also 24, were visiting a friend at the complex and had parked their motorcycles in a walkway near the apartment of Ahmad Rainey.
Gilda Woodridge, Rainey's girlfriend, initially approached the
men and asked them to move their motorcycles. As they complied and walked downstairs, they were met by the 33-year-old Rainey. An argument ensued, during which Rainey went into his apartment, emerged with a firearm, and shot both Millon and Lewis at close range. When emergency personnel arrived after 7 p.m., both victims were found beside their motorcycles and were pronounced dead at the scene. New Orleans police later confirmed that both Millon and Lewis were unarmed.
In the aftermath of the shooting, both Rainey and Woodridge were implicated. Woodridge, then 27, surrendered to homicide detectives and was arrested on charges of being a principal to murder. Rainey initially evaded capture but eventually turned himself in to the police. He was charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
During his trial, Rainey claimed he acted in self-defense, stating that he felt threatened and believed one of the men was reaching for a gun. The murder weapon was never recovered. After a trial, the jury delivered a split verdict. Ahmad Rainey was found guilty of manslaughter and obstruction of justice in the death of Vernon Lewis. However, he was acquitted of murder or any lesser charge in the death of Daniel Millon. Rainey faced a potential sentence of up to 40 years in prison for his convictions.
