In the pre-dawn hours of January 26, 2016, the quiet streets of New Orleans' Holy Cross neighborhood were broken by the urgent sounds of a police raid. A team of officers, part of a Drug Enforcement Administration task force, was executing a warrant at a home on Douglas Street. Among them was Stephen Christopher Arnold, a 35-year-old male detective with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. Known for his bravery and dedication, Arnold was the first to enter the residence.
As the team moved inside, gunfire erupted from a bedroom, and Arnold was struck multiple times.
The hail of bullets left Detective Arnold with devastating injuries. He was shot five times, with wounds to his neck, torso, and arm. Rushed from the scene, he would spend the next five years in a state of constant medical care, having sustained injuries from which he would never recover. His long and arduous struggle came to an end on May 23, 2021, when the 40-year-old detective succumbed to the wounds he had received in the line of duty. A 12-year veteran of the sheriff's office, Arnold was remembered by his colleagues as a dedicated and courageous officer who had also served with the New Orleans Police Department.
The man responsible for the shooting, Jarvis Hardy, was apprehended at the scene. He later claimed that he fired his weapon because he believed he was being robbed. Inside the home, investigators found narcotics and firearms. Hardy was arrested and faced a number of charges, including attempted first-degree murder and various drug and gun-related offenses. In August 2018, Hardy pleaded guilty in federal court to multiple charges stemming from the shooting and the initial drug investigation. He was subsequently sentenced to 35 years in a federal prison for his crimes.
