In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a 30-year-old Black transgender man named Dalina Demarkis Stamsberry, also known as Demarkis Stansberry, lost his life on February 27, 2016. The incident occurred inside a home on Prescott Road, where he was fatally shot. The man responsible for the shooting was identified as his friend, Nicholas Matthews.
According to reports, Matthews admitted to the police that he was the one who shot Stamsberry. He claimed, however, that the shooting was a tragic accident. Matthews told investigators that he believed the handgun's magazine was empty. His reasoning was that he had fired several rounds from the weapon on New Year's Eve and was unaware that any bullets remained.
Following the shooting, law enforcement took Nicholas Matthews into custody. He was subsequently charged with several offenses in connection with Stamsberry's death. The charges filed against him included negligent homicide, illegal use of a weapon, and possession of a firearm by a felon. After his arrest, Matthews was held on a $90,000 bond.
