In a tragic series of events on April 28, 2016, in Sulphur, Louisiana, 38-year-old Cody A. McAdams died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after murdering his estranged wife. The day's turmoil began when Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a residence in the Carlyss community in response to burglary and trespassing calls. At the scene, they found McAdams in a pasture behind the home of his wife's parents, where she and their 5-year-old daughter had been living.
It is
believed that McAdams, a resident of Kirbyville, Texas, had gone to the home with the intention of kidnapping his estranged wife, 33-year-old Brandi McAdams, and their daughter. When deputies arrived, a violent confrontation ensued. Cody McAdams shot and killed his wife before turning his weapon on the responding officers. He fired at least three shots at a deputy's vehicle, but thankfully, neither of the deputies was injured.
As the tense situation unfolded, one of the deputies returned fire, grazing McAdams's arm. However, the coroner later determined that Cody McAdams's fatal wound was self-inflicted. Brandi McAdams was pronounced dead at the scene. Their young daughter, who witnessed the horrific event, was physically unharmed and was subsequently placed in the care of other family members.
The investigation into the incident revealed a history of domestic violence, with Brandi McAdams having reported an incident to the sheriff's office just the night before her death. The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's office investigated Brandi McAdams's death, while the Louisiana State Police handled the investigation into the officer-involved shooting aspect of the case. As Cody McAdams was the sole perpetrator and died at the scene, no arrests were made in connection with his wife's murder.
