In the late afternoon of June 22, 2016, a routine stop on a street in Harvey, Louisiana, turned fatal for a dedicated law enforcement officer. Detective David Frances Michel Jr., a 50-year-old male, was a respected member of the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, where he had served for nine years and was assigned to the Street Crimes Unit. Fulfilling his lifelong dream of being in law enforcement, he was known for a fun personality that was cherished by those who knew him.

Wednesday, Detective Michel initiated a subject stop near the intersection of Manhattan Boulevard and Ascot Road. During the encounter, a struggle broke out between the detective and the individual he had stopped. The situation escalated tragically when the man drew a handgun from his waistband and opened fire on Detective Michel, striking him multiple times. Even after the detective fell to the ground, the assailant continued to shoot.
Emergency services rushed Detective Michel to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his wounds. The shooter fled the scene on foot, prompting a swift response from law enforcement. A short time later, a suspect was apprehended and subsequently charged with murder.
Years later, justice was served in the case. On May 5, 2022, the suspect, then 25 years old, was convicted of violating his probation and received a life sentence. He also pleaded guilty to the murder of Detective Michel and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of probation, parole, or suspension of his sentence. The community mourned the loss of a hero, and David Michel Jr. is survived by his wife, mother, and son.
