This individual was later identified as 24-year-old Justin Nickolas Twyne. The backpack found at the crime scene contained documents bearing Twyne's name, and an analysis of Short's discarded cell phone revealed text messages between the two, arranging a meeting at Short's residence.
The investigation into Justin Twyne revealed a transient individual with a criminal record that included financial fraud and battery. Authorities tracked him to New Orleans, where he was apprehended on an unrelated warrant on April 10, 2017. A search of the hotel room where Twyne was staying uncovered credit cards and other personal items belonging to James Short. The most damning piece of evidence came from the fingerprint analysis of the murder weapon, which confirmed Twyne's prints on the knife.
Faced with a mountain of evidence, prosecutors charged Justin Nickolas Twyne with first-degree murder.
