On that fateful evening, Gardner was last seen leaving his girlfriend's home in LaPlace. He departed with an unidentified man in a silver Buick with tinted windows. When days passed with no word from him, his family grew increasingly concerned and reported him missing. The search for Marquell Gardner would conclude in the most devastating way possible nearly a week later.
On Sunday, November 6, 2016, a passerby in Baton Rouge discovered a decomposed body in an area of tall grass in the 900 block of Napoleon Street. The location was near the former Baton Rouge Police headquarters. The following day, the authorities publicly identified the deceased as Marquell Gardner. An initial investigation revealed that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
