Concerns first arose on November 7, 2016, when Samantha's 20-year-old daughter, Sydney, who was seven months pregnant, failed to appear for her own
baby shower. This unsettling absence prompted a wellness check at the family's residence. Simultaneously, reports of a house fire at the same address began to circulate, drawing emergency services to a gruesome scene.
Investigators discovered Samantha Hanson's body just outside the front door; she had been shot and stabbed multiple times. Inside the home, they found her husband, 49-year-old Dwayne Hanson, who had been shot to death in the kitchen. In an upstairs bedroom, authorities located the body of their daughter, Sydney. She had been repeatedly stabbed, and her body was set on fire in an attempt to conceal the crime. The unborn child also did not survive.
Suspicion quickly fell upon Jatory Evans, the 28-year-old ex-boyfriend of Sydney Hanson and the presumed father of her unborn child. The family had recently sought and obtained a restraining order against Evans following a dispute. Friends and family later revealed a history of domestic abuse, jealousy, and controlling behavior from Evans, who had reportedly stalked Sydney at her job and damaged her parents' property. In a defiant act, Evans allegedly left the restraining order near one of the victims' bodies.
Following a daylong manhunt, law enforcement located and arrested Jatory Evans in New Orleans. He was taken into custody with visible injuries, including scratches and cuts, suggesting a struggle had occurred. Evans was subsequently charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of feticide. Despite his denial of the allegations, the evidence against him appeared substantial. Before he could stand trial for the heinous crimes, Jatory Evans was found dead in his jail cell in an apparent suicide.
