In the summer of 2022, the community of Centreville, Alabama, was rocked by the tragic death of Bibb County Sheriff's Deputy Bradley Johnson, a dedicated 32-year-old male public servant. On June 29th, what began as a pursuit of a stolen vehicle escalated into a violent confrontation that would ultimately claim Johnson's life. He and his partner, Deputy Chris Poole, were engaged in the chase when the suspect opened fire, striking both officers.
Johnson was critically wounded in the exchange.
The suspect, identified as Austin Patrick Hall, fled the scene on foot, sparking an intensive 16-hour manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies. While the search for Hall was underway, Deputy Johnson was rushed to UAB Hospital for emergency treatment. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries the following day, June 30, 2022. Even in his death, Johnson's commitment to serving others continued as his organs were donated. His partner, Deputy Poole, was also shot and wounded during the incident but ultimately recovered from his injuries.
Following the extensive search, Austin Hall was located and taken into custody. He was subsequently charged with three counts of capital murder in connection with the death of Deputy Johnson, as well as one count of attempted murder for the shooting of Deputy Poole and one count of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. Investigators later revealed that Hall was a convicted felon who had been released from prison early. This revelation prompted scrutiny of the state's 'good time' laws for inmates.
In the wake of his death, Bradley Johnson was remembered as a hero who had dedicated his life to law enforcement. He had served with the Bibb County Sheriff's Office for eight years and was a respected member of the community. He was a father of two daughters and was engaged to be married. In July 2023, it was announced that the State of Alabama would pay $1 million to the family of Deputy Johnson, the maximum amount allowable under state law for a line-of-duty death. The criminal case against Austin Hall continues to move through the legal system.
