In the summer of 2022, the life of 32-year-old Bibb County Sheriff's Deputy Brad Johnson was tragically cut short in the line of duty. On June 29th, Johnson and his partner, Deputy Chris Poole, were engaged in a pursuit of a stolen vehicle in rural Bibb County, near Centreville, Alabama. The chase ended in a violent confrontation when the suspect opened fire on the two deputies.
Both officers were struck by gunfire, with Johnson sustaining a critical head wound.
Following the shooting, a massive 16-hour manhunt was launched for the suspect, who was identified as 26-year-old Austin Patrick Hall. Hall was eventually captured and taken into custody. In the meantime, Deputy Johnson was airlifted to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day, June 30, 2022. His partner, Chris Poole, survived his injuries and later recovered. Johnson, a K-9 officer and a beloved member of the community, was remembered as a hero, and his family chose to donate his organs, allowing him to save more lives even in death.
Austin Patrick Hall, a man with a lengthy criminal history, was subsequently indicted on three counts of capital murder for the death of Deputy Johnson, one count of attempted murder for the shooting of Deputy Poole, and one count of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. The case brought attention to flaws in Alabama's correctional 'good time' law, as it was revealed that Hall had been released from prison just months before the fatal shooting. This led to a public outcry and calls for legislative reform. In the wake of this tragedy, the state of Alabama agreed to a one million dollar settlement with Deputy Johnson's family. The criminal case against Austin Patrick Hall is proceeding through the justice system.
