On April 8, 1907, Deputy Sheriff John Roderick of the Bibb County Sheriff's Office in Centreville, Alabama, was fatally shot while attempting to apprehend a burglary suspect. Accompanied by a Tuscaloosa County deputy, Roderick approached the suspect's residence near the Sipsey Lumber Company plant. As they neared the house, a shot was fired from within, striking Roderick and causing his immediate death. The suspect managed to escape following the incident.
