In the early morning hours of February 13, 2017, the life of Tevin Gunter, a 25-year-old male, was cut short by violence in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. At approximately 6:00 a.m., Gunter was discovered in front of a residence in the 5300 block of Annette Street. He was suffering from apparent gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by the East Baton Rouge Coroner's office.
The area where the shooting occurred was known to have experienced several other shootings in the past.
The Baton Rouge Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, but a motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, and authorities did not identify any suspects in the immediate aftermath. Gunter's life was one marked by personal struggles. Less than a year before his death, he had been arrested for robbing a convenience store. In a striking display of tough love, his own mother identified him to the police after they released surveillance footage of the robbery. He had been released from jail in November 2016, just a few months before he was killed. His mother revealed he had been battling drug abuse and was living on the streets. At the time of his death, Tevin Gunter was a father to three children.
