Alvin Edwin Brewer, a 42-year-old African American man from Monroe, North Carolina, tragically passed away on January 26, 2020. He was shot and killed in Monroe, NC, after being involved in a fight on Commerce Drive. According to witnesses, Brewer was engaged in a physical altercation with a light-skinned man when another individual, later identified as Jakaiy Hammonds, stepped in and fired multiple shots, ultimately leading to Brewer's death.
Following the incident, Monroe police
arrested Jakaiy Hammonds and charged him with first-degree murder. Additionally, a third suspect, Elija Demon Bennett, was later arrested and charged with the same crime. Both Hammonds and Bennett were implicated in the robbery attempt that led to Brewer's death. The investigation revealed that the suspects were attempting to steal bond money from Brewer for a fellow gang member. When Brewer resisted, Hammonds shot him three times, and Brewer succumbed to his injuries at a nearby hospital.

In January 2024, Allija Massey, one of the suspects, was convicted of first-degree murder and attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years.
