In what should have been a day of celebration, a promising young life was tragically cut short. On his 16th birthday, March 13, 2017, Darius Plummer, a male resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was shot and killed. The incident occurred in an apartment in the 4700 block of Southpark Drive. Despite the efforts of medical responders who transported him to a nearby hospital, Plummer succumbed to his injuries.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting point to a grim gathering that ended in
bloodshed. East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene where they found the teenager with a gunshot wound. At the time of the incident, it is believed that several other people were present in the apartment. Investigations into the events leading up to the shooting revealed a scene of chaos and a suspect who quickly fled.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a suspect was identified as 49-year-old Octavio Bringas. According to witness statements, Bringas was the only other person in the room with Plummer when the gun discharged. Family members of Bringas who were in the home at the time reported hearing a single gunshot and then discovering Plummer wounded. Bringas had vanished from the apartment complex by the time law enforcement arrived.
Further developments in the case suggested a potential, albeit tragic, accident. It was reported that Bringas later contacted one of the witnesses and confessed that he had been playing with the firearm when it accidentally went off, striking Plummer. This admission, however, did little to mitigate the gravity of the situation, as a young man's life had been lost. The search for Bringas began as he was sought in connection with the fatal shooting.
