In the summer of 2017, the life of Brittney 'Bei' Elaine Johnson was tragically cut short. On the evening of Saturday, July 8, 2017, in the Hollygrove neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana, gun violence claimed the 19-year-old's life. Born in Decatur, Georgia, Brittney had become a part of the New Orleans community, having attended Delgado Community College.
Her sudden and violent death left a void in the lives of her family and many friends who remembered her passion for music.
Following the incident, which was part of a double shooting, the New Orleans Police Department began an investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
In the course of their investigation, police identified a suspect. A 16-year-old male was subsequently arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. The arrest brought a measure of progress in a case that had ended a young woman's life far too soon, leaving a family to mourn and a community to grapple with the senselessness of the act.
