In the spring of 2015, a 26-year-old female named Diamonique Lewis had recently relocated from Dallas to New Orleans, seeking a new beginning with her two young children. On the evening of Thursday, April 23rd, she and her 25-year-old boyfriend, Louis Brooks, were at her apartment on Granville Street. Neighbors would later report hearing loud noises, with one dismissing it as a domestic dispute, a seemingly common occurrence, while another distinctly heard gunshots around 10:30 p.m.
and witnessed two men fleeing from the residence.
The following morning, at approximately 3 a.m., police were dispatched to the apartment. The reasons for the dispatch are conflicting in reports, with some indicating a response to a shooting and others a welfare check. Upon arrival, officers discovered a grim scene. Both Diamonique Lewis and Louis Brooks were found lying on the floor, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds, including to the head. They were pronounced dead at the scene.
