In the heart of New Orleans, a dispute over a misplaced bag escalated into a fatal encounter, ending the life of a 30-year-old man, Carneal Knapper, Jr. The tragic events unfolded on the evening of March 28, 2023, in front of the iconic Willie Mae's Scotch House. Knapper had gone to the restaurant seeking a bag he had previously left behind, leading to a heated argument with employees.
The verbal confrontation quickly intensified, with security camera footage capturing the harrowing
moments. Knapper, who had two pistols tucked in his waistband, pulled them out to show the two employees he was armed. In response, one of the employees, identified as 32-year-old Larry Davis, retrieved a pistol of his own from the trunk of a car and began firing at Knapper. The first shots caused Knapper to fall to the ground, and Davis continued to shoot him. Authorities later noted that Knapper never had the chance to raise his own weapons again. He was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds.
During the altercation, a second restaurant employee also armed himself with a rifle, but did not appear to fire the weapon. Investigators later confirmed that an employee had taken Knapper's bag and placed it in a vehicle. Ten days after the shooting, on May 8th, the New Orleans Police Department moved to arrest Larry Davis. The arrest was not without its own drama, as Davis barricaded himself inside a house on Annunciation Street, leading to a two-hour standoff with the SWAT team and U.S. Marshals. Davis was ultimately taken into custody and booked with second-degree murder and obstruction of justice.
