In the summer of 2018, the life of 18-year-old Shantrell Monique Parker, an African American female, was tragically cut short in a brutal act of violence in New Orleans, Louisiana. On July 29, she and her partner, Gavonte Lampkin, were found dead in a wooded area in the Algiers neighborhood. The couple, who had children together, had been shot multiple times before their bodies were set on fire in a gruesome attempt to conceal the crime.
The investigation into the double homicide
revealed a chilling motive aimed at silencing a witness. Gavonte Lampkin had been preparing to testify against a man accused of a previous shooting that had left Lampkin injured. This made him a target, and ultimately led to his and Shantrell's untimely deaths. The New Orleans Police Department quickly identified two main suspects in the murders: Michael Tyron Robinson and Kirk Powell. A witness claimed that Robinson and Powell had killed the pair at a home on Tullis Drive before moving their bodies to the wooded area where they were discovered.
Following an investigation, Michael Tyron Robinson and Kirk Powell were arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Their associate, Denzel West, was also implicated in the events following the murders. In May 2022, the Orleans Parish District Attorney's Office secured convictions against the three men. Michael Robinson was found guilty of the second-degree murders of Shantrell Parker, Gavonte Lampkin, and another individual, Leroy Benn, Jr. His convictions also included aggravated battery, conspiracy to commit second-degree murder, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy to obstruct justice. Kirk Powell and Denzel West were convicted on multiple counts of obstruction of justice and conspiracy to obstruct justice for their roles in the affair. Powell was also found guilty of conspiracy to commit second-degree murder.
