A spontaneous trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras ended in tragedy for a 33-year-old Black or African American man from Orangeburg, South Carolina. Brandon Bovain, a father to a young son, was fatally shot on February 25, 2022, an innocent victim caught in the crossfire of a violent exchange. He had traveled to the city with his girlfriend and younger brother for what should have been a joyous celebration.
The fatal incident occurred in the parking lot of a hotel where Bovain and his
family were checking in. After going back to his vehicle to retrieve his phone, occupants of two other cars in the parking lot began shooting at each other. A stray bullet struck Bovain, who was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound. Investigators do not believe he was the intended target of the gunfire.
In the wake of the shooting, Bovain's family expressed their profound grief and shock. They described him as a loving father and a good person at heart who enjoyed traveling and fishing. Their search for answers and closure in the sudden loss of their loved one has been a painful journey.
The New Orleans Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. In the immediate aftermath, authorities were reportedly looking for a car of interest in connection with the shooting. However, there have been no publicly announced arrests or identification of suspects in the case.
