On the evening of September 26, 2017, Zachary Barron-Melton, a 22-year-old male, was at his cousin's home on the 18000 block of Coyle Street, near 7 Mile and Clarita Avenue in Detroit. That night, two male suspects entered the residence and announced a robbery. During the course of the robbery, several shots were fired. Zachary, who was affectionately known as Scooter, was struck by the gunfire, as was another man in the house. Emergency services were called, and Zachary was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The Detroit Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide and released sketches of the two suspects they were searching for in connection with the fatal shooting. A year after his death, Zachary's family, still seeking answers and closure, stood with Crime Stoppers to appeal to the public for help in solving the case. A reward of $2,500 was offered for any information that would lead to an arrest. The family expressed their profound grief and pleaded with the community to break the silence, emphasizing that anyone could find themselves in their position, begging for justice.
As of late 2024, the case appears to remain unsolved, with community members online expressing sorrow for the young life cut short and frustration over the lack of resolution.
