On the night of his death, Montanez-Rivera accompanied a friend who was responding to a call for help from his girlfriend. The girlfriend had complained about unwanted attention from an unknown man, and Montanez-Rivera went along to help de-escalate the situation. The confrontation occurred near the intersection of Varney and Ackley in Detroit. Upon their arrival, a fight broke out, and the situation quickly escalated to gunfire. During the chaos, Montanez-Rivera was struck by a bullet and fell to the ground. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. Witnesses were unable to identify the source of the gunshots, leaving the circumstances of his death shrouded in uncertainty.
In the wake of this tragedy, Joshua's family has been left grappling with immense grief and a frustrating lack of answers. His sister, Yalmares Torres-Montanez, described him as a devoted son, brother, and uncle who was dedicated to his family. Despite their pleas for information and the offering of a $2,500 reward by Crime Stoppers of Michigan for any tips that could lead to an arrest, the case has grown cold. The Detroit Police Department has investigated the homicide, but to date, no suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.
