On a summer evening in Detroit, what began as a simple stop for snacks turned into a tragedy that would forever alter the lives of one family. DreVaughn Tellis, a 22-year-old Black man, was a father to a young daughter and was awaiting the birth of his son. On June 15, 2020, he was with friends when they pulled into an Exxon gas station on West Eight Mile Road.
Around 11 p.m., as they were getting back into their black Dodge Magnum, the night was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
A vehicle, described as a possibly gray Chevrolet Impala or Malibu, drove by and an unknown individual opened fire. Tellis, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was struck by the gunfire. His friends were unharmed in the sudden onslaught of violence. Tragically, another customer who was pumping gas at the time was also hit by a stray bullet.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, and DreVaughn Tellis was transported to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries in the early hours of June 16, 2020. His life was cut short, leaving behind a grieving family and two children who would grow up without their father.
In the wake of the shooting, Crime Stoppers of Michigan issued a plea to the public for any information that could lead to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for Tellis's death. A cash reward was offered for tips that would help investigators solve the case. However, despite the appeals for information, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects. The murder of DreVaughn Tellis remains unsolved.
