In the quiet community of Lockport, Louisiana, a young life was abruptly cut short on the night of February 10, 2019. Alton Adams, a 19-year-old Caucasian male from nearby Bayou Blue, was inside his mother's residence on East Fontinelle Street when the sound of gunfire shattered the evening calm. It was approximately 10:25 p.m., and Adams was with six other people in the home. Unseen from the outside, an assailant fired at least eight rounds at the house, with four penetrating the walls.
One of these bullets found its way to Adams, striking and killing him. He was pronounced dead at the scene, reportedly in his mother's arms with his younger siblings nearby.
The Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office launched an immediate investigation into the shooting. Through interviews with witnesses and neighbors, detectives quickly identified a suspect. On February 11, the day after the fatal shooting, authorities arrested 17-year-old Jyairus Folse of Lockport. Folse was charged with second-degree murder and six counts of attempted second-degree murder, one for each of the other individuals inside the residence with Adams at the time of the incident. He was taken into custody and transported to the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex, with his bond set at $5 million. The motive for the shooting remained unclear as the investigation continued.
The legal proceedings against Jyairus Folse took a different turn as the case progressed. A grand jury indicted Folse on a lesser charge of manslaughter. His trial in November 2019 ended with a deadlocked jury, resulting in no verdict. Subsequently, on December 19, 2019, Folse pleaded guilty to a charge of principal to negligent homicide. He received a suspended sentence of five years and 310 days in jail, with credit for time already served. This plea deal led to his release, and he was placed on three years of supervised probation.
However, Folse's freedom was short-lived. On December 24, 2019, just days after his release, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff's Office received a tip that he was in possession of a firearm. Detectives located Folse at a boat launch returning from a hunting trip and discovered a shotgun in his possession, a direct violation of his probation. He was taken back into custody, facing new charges related to the probation violation.
