In the midst of a violent Memorial Day weekend in New Orleans, 35-year-old Roy Antione Cain, a male, lost his life in a burst of gunfire. The incident unfolded on the evening of Sunday, May 26, 2019, at the intersection of North Tonti and Saint Anthony streets. Police responded to reports of a shooting around 10:30 p.m. and discovered Cain at the scene, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the location.
The violence of that night also left another person, an unidentified woman, injured. She was found in a car on Pauger Street, suffering from multiple bullet wounds, and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The investigation into Cain's death led to the arrest of a suspect, Philip Soublet Jr., later in 2019. Soublet was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of Cain and was awaiting his trial, which had been scheduled for July 18, 2022. However, the case would never reach a courtroom conclusion.
In a dramatic and unforeseen turn of events, Philip Soublet Jr. was killed in a jailhouse altercation on June 10, 2022, while in custody at the Orleans Parish Justice Center. His death from blunt force trauma occurred before he could be tried for the murder of Roy Cain, bringing a sudden and conclusive end to the legal proceedings.
