On New Year's Day in 2020, a fatal shooting in Uptown New Orleans claimed the life of 45-year-old Chris “Boogie” McCann. The incident occurred in the 3400 block of South Claiborne Street. McCann, identified as a convicted member of the '3NG' gang, was found shot shortly after 5:30 p.m.
The investigation into McCann's death led authorities to Jermal Williams, then 27 years old. Surveillance footage from the day of the shooting showed Williams' car at the crime scene.
A significant breakthrough in the case came when ballistic reports matched a firearm found in Williams' Algiers apartment to the weapon used in the killing of McCann. Williams was subsequently arrested on April 20, 2020.
Following a three-day jury trial, Jermal Williams was convicted of manslaughter in September 2023. In addition to the manslaughter conviction, Williams was also found guilty of obstruction of justice and illegal possession of a firearm by a felon. As a result of these convictions, he faced a potential sentence of up to 100 years in prison.
