In the late afternoon of November 30, 2024, the sound of gunfire shattered the relative quiet of the 6700 block of Tara Lane in New Orleans. When the echoes faded, two lives were tragically cut short. Inside an apartment complex in the Westlake Forest neighborhood, police discovered the bodies of 21-year-old Rashada Richardson and 18-year-old Wayne Orsin. Both men had sustained fatal gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene by New Orleans EMS.
The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office would later confirm their identities and the preliminary cause of death as gunshot-related injuries. This double homicide marked a grim punctuation to a violent holiday weekend in the city.
The investigation into the deaths of Richardson and Orsin moved swiftly. New Orleans Police Department Homicide Section detectives worked the case, and their efforts soon focused on two individuals. Investigators identified Darrell Fairley Jr. and Cornelius G. Tillman as the alleged perpetrators. Warrants were secured for their arrest, each facing two counts of second-degree murder. The pursuit of the suspects was short-lived, as on December 5, 2024, both men were located and taken into custody without incident. Fairley and Tillman were subsequently booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center.
Following the arrests, law enforcement officials acknowledged the role of public assistance in the rapid progression of the case. While not delving into specifics, they indicated that multiple sources of information from the community provided crucial puzzle pieces that led to significant physical evidence from the scene.
