In the early hours of February 8, 2020, in the Mid-City neighborhood of New Orleans, the life of 25-year-old Niukura Gonzales was tragically cut short. Gonzales, a Hispanic female, was with another individual, Angel Funez, in the 600 block of South Pierce Street at approximately 12:25 a.m. when they were approached by a man wearing a hood and riding a woman's cruiser-style bicycle. The assailant shot both Gonzales and Funez multiple times.
Emergency services arrived to find a grim scene.
Funez was pronounced dead at the location, while Gonzales was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical staff, she succumbed to her injuries later that same night. The incident was quickly determined to be a homicide, sparking an intensive investigation by the New Orleans Police Department.
Investigators later revealed that the motive behind the shooting was a botched armed robbery. The case saw a significant breakthrough when DNA evidence recovered from one of the victims was matched to a sample in the federal CODIS database. This led police to 17-year-old Eric Cloud. A search of Cloud's residence uncovered additional evidence linking him to the crime.
Subsequently, Eric Cloud was arrested and faced serious charges for his alleged role in the deaths of Gonzales and Funez. An Orleans Parish grand jury handed down a four-count indictment against him, which included two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of armed robbery. If convicted of the murder charges, Cloud faces the possibility of a life sentence. However, due to his age at the time of the offense, he may become eligible for parole after serving 25 years. The armed robbery charges carry a potential sentence of 10 to 99 years without the possibility of parole.
