In the spring of 2020, the life of a young Caucasian woman, Taylor D. Baskin, was tragically cut short in Shreveport, Louisiana. On April 3rd, the 26-year-old female was found deceased, having been shot multiple times in the city's Highland neighborhood. Her death set off a manhunt for the person responsible, a search that would come to a dramatic and violent end just days later.
Authorities quickly identified a suspect in Baskin's death: her 28-year-old boyfriend, Derek T. Swanson. A warrant was issued for his arrest on a charge of second-degree murder. The days following the discovery of Baskin's body were tense, as law enforcement searched for Swanson, who was considered armed and dangerous. His erratic behavior was evident as he reportedly broke into a house and attempted to steal a truck. At one point, a Caddo Parish deputy spotted Swanson and attempted to question him, but Swanson fired at the deputy and managed to escape.
The search for Swanson concluded on April 7, 2020. Law enforcement officers, including three state police troopers and a sheriff's deputy, located him as he was leaving a home he had broken into. As he exited the residence, Swanson initiated a shootout with the officers. The authorities returned fire, and in the exchange, Derek T. Swanson was fatally shot.
