The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when intruders broke into Cortez's home in the 8100 block of Lenore Street. Javier and his mother, Maria Cruz, who was visiting from Veracruz, Mexico, were sleeping when the attackers kicked in the back door. The intruders bound both Javier and his mother with duct tape before ransacking the house in search of valuables. During the incident, Javier was severely beaten and ultimately died from blunt trauma to the head.
The crime was particularly tragic as the attackers left Maria Cruz still bound, and she was found later that morning by another family member who had arrived to pick up Javier for work. Investigators were unable to determine a clear motive for the attack, although it was believed that the intruders may have expected to find cash or valuables inside the home. Javier and his wife Gabriela were separated at the time, and he had just moved into the house shortly before the attack.
