On June 19, 2023, at approximately 12:09 AM, Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a reported shooting at 5050 FM 1960 W, Suite 112, in Houston, Texas. Upon arrival, they found 58-year-old Carlos Vega Arzuaga lying on the sidewalk in front of an illegal game room, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite prompt medical attention, Vega Arzuaga was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations revealed that Vega Arzuaga, originally from Cuba, was employed as an armed security guard at the establishment. He confronted two armed individuals attempting to rob the game room, during which he was fatally shot. The assailants, described as two Black males, fled the scene in a dark-colored sedan.
On June 23, 2023, authorities arrested 25-year-old Jhekori Simpson in connection with the murder. During interrogation, Simpson confessed to shooting Vega Arzuaga during the planned robbery. He was subsequently charged with capital murder and detained at the Harris County Jail.
Further investigation led to the identification of a second suspect, 38-year-old Larry Harris. Harris was indicted by a Harris County grand jury and charged with being an accomplice in Vega Arzuaga's death. At the time of his indictment, Harris was already in custody on an aggravated robbery charge related to the attempted robbery at the game room.
Vega Arzuaga's death was a tragic loss for his family and community. A GoFundMe campaign was established by his daughter-in-law to assist with funeral expenses and support his teenage son residing in Cuba. The campaign highlighted Vega Arzuaga's dedication to his family and his commitment to his work as a security guard.
