In the spring of 2020, a life was tragically cut short in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. On the evening of Monday, April 20th, authorities were called to the intersection of West 10th Street and Orange Street around 5:30 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered the body of 22-year-old Dequan Riley lying in the road, having already succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into the young man's death swiftly led to a suspect.
The following morning, the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office announced the arrest of 20-year-old Deontre Powe in connection with the fatal shooting. Powe was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, and authorities indicated that further charges could be pending as their investigation continued. The community was left to grapple with the sudden and violent loss of a young life.
