In a quiet Baton Rouge neighborhood on April 26, 2020, the life of 58-year-old Curtis Richardson was tragically cut short in an act of violence that stemmed from a domestic dispute. Remembered by his family as a loving protector, Richardson was a man who cherished his wife, children, and stepchildren. His death was the first in a series of violent acts that would also claim the life of a police officer and leave another seriously wounded.
The chain of events began when Richardson
intervened in a situation involving his stepdaughter and her boyfriend, Ronnie Kato. This intervention led to Kato fatally shooting Richardson at his home. Following the initial shooting, Kato fled the scene, prompting a search by law enforcement. The manhunt led Baton Rouge Police Lt. Glenn Hutto Jr. and Cpl. Derrick Maglone to a residential backyard where Kato ambushed them with an assault-style rifle. In the ensuing gunfire, Lt. Hutto was killed, and Cpl. Maglone was critically injured. After the shootings, Kato barricaded himself inside a nearby home, leading to an hourslong standoff with police before he was ultimately taken into custody.
In the aftermath of the violent spree, Ronnie Kato faced a series of serious charges. An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury indicted him on two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Curtis Richardson and Lt. Glenn Hutto Jr. He was also charged with attempted first-degree murder, home invasion, domestic abuse with a child, and domestic abuse with aggravated assault. Initially, Kato entered a plea of not guilty. However, on November 16, 2022, in a development that brought the legal proceedings to a close, Kato pleaded guilty to manslaughter, attempted first-degree murder, and first-degree murder. As a result of his guilty plea, he was sentenced to life in prison.
