In the late afternoon of December 29, 2017, a transaction that was supposed to be a sale of firearms turned deadly in the parking lot of the Prestige Beauty Salon on Plank Road in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The incident resulted in the death of 32-year-old Karl Moore Jr., a male resident of the city. What began as a prearranged meeting for the exchange of guns quickly devolved into an armed robbery, leaving Moore with a fatal gunshot wound to his abdomen.

were able to piece together the events leading up to the shooting through witness statements and surveillance footage from the area. Three men were seen fleeing the scene immediately after the gunshot. Authorities identified two of the individuals as 20-year-old Jordale Carter and 22-year-old Denver Carter. Their identification was aided by descriptions from witnesses and images and videos that had been posted on social media. The investigation revealed that Moore was at the location to sell firearms, which were in a black messenger bag he was carrying.
Within days, both Jordale and Denver Carter were apprehended by the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office SWAT team. They were subsequently charged with second-degree murder and armed robbery. A third male who was with the Carters and also fled the scene was never publicly identified. The case against Denver Carter went to trial, where a jury ultimately found him guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter.
