In the heart of New Orleans, a visit between coworkers on June 3, 2020, took a tragic and fatal turn, ending the life of 22-year-old Lashonda Temple. Temple, a female, and two friends had just left the Marquis Apartments in the 2600 block of Poydras Street in Mid-City after seeing a male coworker. As they were getting into their car, they were confronted by the man's girlfriend, 26-year-old Breonna Green, who had just returned home from work.
An argument erupted between Green and the
three women. The verbal altercation escalated with horrifying speed when Green allegedly produced a firearm and opened fire on the group. A single bullet struck Lashonda Temple in the chest, inflicting a mortal wound. A second woman, aged 25, was shot in her left bicep but survived. The third woman was not physically harmed in the incident. Surveillance footage from the scene captured a woman, identified as Green, walking away from the area with a gun in her right hand.
In the days that followed the shooting, Breonna Green turned herself in to the authorities. She was arrested and booked into the Orleans Justice Center jail on June 8 on suspicion of murder. Following an investigation, on October 1, the District Attorney's office secured a murder indictment against Green. She was charged with the second-degree murder of Lashonda Temple, attempted second-degree murder of the second victim, and obstruction of justice in a homicide investigation. If convicted of second-degree murder, Green faces a mandatory life sentence. The attempted murder charge carries a potential sentence of 10 to 50 years, and the obstruction charge is punishable by up to 40 years in prison. Green remained in custody in lieu of a $210,000 bond.
