On a tragic holiday weekend, a shopping trip turned deadly for 19-year-old Bryan Theus of Shreveport. The male teenager lost his life on Saturday, July 4, 2020, following a violent encounter at the St. Vincent Mall. The incident, which began with a brief, heated exchange of words inside the Dillard's department store, escalated with shocking swiftness, culminating in a fatal shooting just outside the east entrance of the business shortly before 3:00 p.m.
Investigators believe Theus and
his alleged assailant, 22-year-old Treyvious Dejuan Dotie, also of Shreveport, were acquainted with one another. After the initial confrontation inside the store, both men exited the building. A police report indicated that Theus appeared 'ready to fight' as he followed Dotie outside. It was then that Dotie allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot Theus multiple times. According to witness statements and video evidence, Dotie then walked back toward the injured Theus, who was lying on the ground, and fired several more shots.
First responders who arrived at the scene found Theus suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. They administered aid until the Shreveport Fire Department arrived and transported him to Ochsner LSU Health hospital, where he was pronounced dead. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Dotie turned himself in to the authorities and was taken to the Shreveport Police Complex for questioning.
Following interviews with detectives and a review of the evidence, including a handgun and shell casings recovered from the scene, Treyvious Dotie was arrested and booked into the Shreveport City Jail. He was charged with one count of second-degree murder. A judge later set his bond at $350,000, and he was held at the Caddo Correctional Center. The death of Bryan Theus was officially confirmed by the Shreveport Police through fingerprint comparisons.
