Jeffery Darensburgh, a 34-year-old Black man, died after a shooting in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the early hours of July 5, 2020.
Around 3:00 a.m., New Orleans Police Department officers responded to what was initially reported as a traffic accident on General De Gaulle Drive near Westbend Parkway, in the Algiers area. When they arrived, they found Darensburgh suffering from gunshot wounds inside a vehicle; emergency medical crews rushed him to a hospital, but he later succumbed to his
injuries.
Investigators said the scene on General De Gaulle Drive was likely the end of a violent chain of events rather than the beginning. Their early working theory was that he had been shot while in his car at another location, and that he then drove—wounded and fading—until he crashed along that stretch near Westbend Parkway, where patrol officers and paramedics discovered him.
