In the late hours of October 3, 2020, events were set in motion that would end the life of 26-year-old Demarcus Cunanny Danzell Lewis. That night, Lewis was at a trailer in Mansfield, Louisiana, with a few other people. Also present was 41-year-old Douglas Thomas, who had arrived at the residence. Accounts of Thomas's reasons for being there varied, with some suggesting he was visiting his cousin's girlfriend and Thomas himself claiming he was there to sell methamphetamine.
Lewis and Thomas, who had apparently never met before that night, were seen on video surveillance at the trailer. Just before 9:30 p.m., Thomas was recorded gesturing for Lewis to follow him, and shortly after, he was seen leading Lewis out of the trailer by the arm.
Thomas placed Lewis in the front passenger seat of his SUV and drove to a remote wellsite in DeSoto Parish. There, he shot Demarcus Lewis once in the head, leaving his body to be discovered the following morning, on October 4, 2020. After the killing, Thomas fled the state, prompting a manhunt. Law enforcement officials spotted him at a convenience store in Medicine Lodge, Kansas, the next day, but he had already left in a Lexus SUV. An extensive search was launched by multiple law enforcement agencies. The vehicle was eventually found, and on the morning of October 6, deputies in Harper County, Kansas, saw Thomas walking on a highway near Attica and took him into custody without incident.
Following his arrest, Douglas Thomas was extradited back to Louisiana to face charges for the death of Demarcus Lewis. On December 1, 2020, a DeSoto Parish Grand Jury indicted him for second-degree murder. His trial began on May 25, 2022. During the proceedings, prosecutors presented the video evidence from the trailer. An autopsy report confirmed Lewis was 5'6' and weighed 159 pounds, and a toxicology report was positive for methamphetamine and marijuana. Thomas, who was 5'11' and weighed around 200 pounds at the time, claimed he acted in self-defense. He alleged that when he opened the SUV door at the wellsite for Lewis to get out, Lewis lunged at him, leading to a tussle on the ground during which he fired the fatal shot. He claimed that if his intent had been murder, he would have killed him back at the trailer.
On May 27, 2022, a jury found Douglas Thomas guilty as charged of second-degree murder. His subsequent motion for a new trial was denied. Thomas appealed his conviction, arguing that the evidence only supported a manslaughter verdict and reiterating his claim of self-defense. However, the appellate court affirmed the conviction. Douglas Thomas was sentenced to life in prison at hard labor without the benefit of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence.
