In the late hours of a Thursday evening in Lafayette, Louisiana, the life of 18-year-old Nathaniel Zhane Sharply was tragically cut short. On October 15, 2020, Nathaniel, a Black male, was one of four victims in a shooting that erupted at Moore Park, where a large crowd had gathered after a University of Louisiana at Lafayette football game. The festive atmosphere of the post-game party turned chaotic when a fight broke out, followed by the sound of gunfire at approximately 1:00 a.m.
When Lafayette Police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a harrowing sight: four individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate medical attention provided by the officers and Acadian Ambulance personnel, Nathaniel Sharply and another young man, 19-year-old JaKyrie Clark, succumbed to their injuries. Two other victims, a 20-year-old female and an 18-year-old male, were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The female victim was treated and released, while the male victim was listed in stable condition. The suspect or suspects had fled the scene before law enforcement's arrival, leaving a community to grapple with the senseless violence that had claimed two young lives.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to a suspect, and on November 5, 2020, the U.S. Marshals Violent Offender Task Force arrested 19-year-old Jamyron Magee of Angie, Louisiana. Magee was taken into custody without incident and subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Nathaniel Sharply and JaKyrie Clark, as well as two counts of attempted first-degree murder for the injuries sustained by the other two victims. He was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.
However, in a significant turn of events, the charges against Jamyron Magee were later dismissed. In September 2022, the District Attorney's office dropped the murder charges that had been brought against him in connection with the Moore Park shooting. This development left the families of Nathaniel Sharply and JaKyrie Clark without the prospect of seeing a conviction in their sons' deaths, and the case took on a new layer of complexity. Another man, who had been facing charges of accessory after the fact to murder in the same case, also had his charges dismissed in August 2022.
