In the early morning hours of a Saturday in Port Allen, Louisiana, the life of 15-year-old Jazzimane Woods was tragically cut short. Just before 1 a.m., while visiting her aunt's apartment on N. 14th Street, the residence was riddled with bullets from the outside. Jazzimane, who was getting ready for bed at the time, was struck by multiple gunshots.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and she was quickly transported to a Baton Rouge hospital, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
Family members described Jazzimane as a 'ray of sunshine' who was actively involved in school functions and athletics, including playing softball at Port Allen High School. Her father stated she was shot three times. The Port Allen Police Chief later confirmed that investigators do not believe Jazzimane was the intended target of the shooting. He issued a stern warning to the perpetrator or perpetrators, vowing that they would be brought to justice.
Following the shooting, an investigation was launched, leading to the arrest of a 14-year-old male in connection with Jazzimane's death. The teenage suspect was taken into custody and faced a charge of second-degree murder. Due to the lack of suitable juvenile detention facilities within Louisiana, authorities had to house the accused teenager out of state, a move that incurred significant daily costs for the parish. The community, already troubled by unsolved murders from previous years, was left mourning the senseless loss of a promising young life.
