A tragic sequence of events unfolded on May 3, 2021, beginning in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, that led to the deaths of a 32-year-old woman, her nephew, and her infant son. Christin Parker, a female, and her 26-year-old nephew, Brandon Parker, were found shot to death in a residence in the Baker area of East Baton Rouge Parish. The initial discovery was made by sheriff's deputies who responded to a disconnected 911 call.
An eyewitness reported that one of Parker's other children ran to a neighbor for help, stating that their mother had been shot.
The suspect in the double homicide was identified as 30-year-old Eric Derell Smith, Christin Parker's ex-boyfriend and the father of her infant son, La'Mello Parker. After allegedly killing Christin and Brandon Parker, Smith abducted 3-month-old La'Mello and fled the state, prompting a multi-agency law enforcement pursuit that crossed into Mississippi. The chase involved numerous police vehicles and continued for a considerable distance along Interstate 10.
The pursuit came to a violent end in Biloxi, Mississippi, after police deployed spike strips to disable Smith's vehicle. As the car came to a stop in the median, a shootout ensued between Smith and law enforcement officers. During the exchange of gunfire, Eric Derell Smith was shot and killed at the scene.
Tragically, the infant, La'Mello Parker, was also struck by a single gunshot during the shootout. The baby was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following day. An autopsy later confirmed that a single gunshot wound was the cause of his death. A grand jury in Harrison County, Mississippi, later investigated the circumstances of the infant's death and found no criminal wrongdoing on the part of the law enforcement officers involved in the shootout. The incident concluded with the deaths of all three individuals involved in the initial abduction and the suspect.
