In the early evening of June 17, 2021, a young man's life was tragically cut short in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Israel Jerome Crockett Jr., a 20-year-old African American male, was fatally wounded in what authorities have described as an accidental shooting. The incident unfolded in the 6700 block of Ford Street around 7:45 p.m.
According to police, Crockett was with 20-year-old Darius Ellis when the shooting occurred.
The two were reportedly playing with a weapon when it discharged, striking Crockett. He was rushed to a local hospital, Our Lady of the Lake, but succumbed to his injuries.
Following an investigation by Baton Rouge Police Homicide Detectives, Darius Ellis was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. He was subsequently booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a charge of negligent homicide. Investigators determined that the shooting was accidental.
The community mourned the loss of a young life taken too soon. Funeral services for Israel Crockett Jr. were held on June 26, 2021, at the Life Changing Ministry in Peck, Louisiana, and he was laid to rest at the Clayton Garden of Rest Cemetery. The incident served as a somber reminder of the potential dangers of mishandling firearms.
