On December 16, 2018, the life of 58-year-old Debbie Jo Whitaker came to a violent end in Caruthersville, Missouri. Known to friends and family as 'Debbie Jo' and formally as Dovie May Green, the female victim was a dedicated home health care nurse who had returned to Southeast Missouri in 2003. She was a member of the Miracle Temple Church of God in Christ, where she was known for her charitable spirit and nurturing nature.
Her death, a result of fatal gun violence, shocked the local community and immediately launched a homicide investigation by the Caruthersville Police Department and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Law enforcement officials quickly identified a primary suspect in the slaying: Whitaker's husband, 57-year-old Dennis Green Sr. Following the discovery of Whitaker's body, authorities initiated a manhunt for Green, alerting the public to be on the lookout for a blue Chevrolet pickup truck with Missouri license plates that he was believed to be driving. Police warned that Green should be considered armed and dangerous, advising citizens not to approach him but to contact law enforcement immediately if he was spotted.
The search for Green concluded three days later, on December 19, 2018, when he turned himself in to authorities. He was subsequently arrested and held at the Pemiscot County Justice Center without bond. Prosecutors charged Green with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with his wife's death. He entered a plea of not guilty to the charges. The legal proceedings against him, however, did not result in a trial verdict; Dennis Green Sr. died on August 18, 2021, at the age of 60, bringing a quiet end to the criminal case.
