On a summer day in Shreveport, Louisiana, a life was tragically cut short, leaving a family to grapple with a sudden and violent loss. Patrick Lynn Goines, a 32-year-old African American male, was a father of four who worked in hotel maintenance. On July 21, 2021, he was at a gas station located in the 2800 block of Hilry Huckaby III Drive when a dispute escalated into a fatal encounter.
He was transported to Ochsner Health where he was pronounced deceased from multiple gunshot injuries to his upper body.
The man responsible for Goines' death was 31-year-old Emmanuel Dewayne Johnson. An altercation between the two men preceded the shooting. Events captured on surveillance video showed Johnson interacting with Goines at his vehicle. At one point, Goines exited his vehicle with a firearm that had an extended magazine, but he never aimed or discharged it. Johnson, however, opened fire, striking Goines three times in the head and chest. As Goines lay on the ground, Johnson fired a final, fatal shot that struck him in the heart.
In the immediate aftermath, Johnson fled the scene. However, the following day, on July 22, 2021, he surrendered to Shreveport Police Violent Crimes Detectives. An arrest warrant had been issued for Johnson, charging him with one count of second-degree murder. The murder weapon was also turned over to the authorities.
Emmanuel Dewayne Johnson was indicted by a grand jury on October 20, 2021, and his trial began on May 10, 2023. At trial, Johnson claimed self-defense, but the evidence presented by the prosecution painted a different picture of the events. After a deliberation that lasted approximately 50 minutes, the jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict for second-degree murder. The conviction carried a mandatory sentence of life in prison at hard labor, without the possibility of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence, ensuring Johnson would face the consequences of his actions that day at the gas station.
