Javoris Debouse, a 23-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on the afternoon of August 12, 2021, in Shreveport, Louisiana. The incident, which also left two other individuals wounded, occurred just before 2:30 p.m. in the Cedar Grove neighborhood, specifically in the 600 block of West 64th Street. Emergency services responded to reports of a shooting and transported Debouse and the other victims to Ochsner LSU Health Hospital, where Debouse ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The
ensuing investigation by the Shreveport Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit pointed to several Black males in a white Nissan truck as being responsible for the shooting. A significant break in the case came two days later, on August 14, when officers with the Office of Special Investigations located the suspect vehicle. A brief pursuit ended with four males abandoning the truck and fleeing on foot. Three of the individuals, identified as Jaylen Burns, Libert Burns, and Tarus Walton, were apprehended and initially booked on unrelated charges.
Further investigation led detectives to identify a fourth suspect, Tre'Veon Jackson, as the individual believed to be directly responsible for Debouse's death and the injuries to the other two victims. Warrants were issued for Jackson, charging him with one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. On August 19, forensic evidence from the Northwest Louisiana Crime Lab connected Jaylen Burns, Libert Burns, and Tarus Walton to the homicide as well. Consequently, they each faced the same charges of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. The final suspect, Tre'Veon Jackson, was taken into custody on September 8 by members of the Shreveport Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit, the U.S. Marshal's Violent Offender's Task Force, and the Shreveport Police Department's Warrants Unit. In November 2021, a Caddo Parish Grand Jury returned true bills of indictment against all four men—Jaylen Burns, Libert Burns, Tre'veon Jackson, and Tarus Walton—for the murder of Javoris Debouse and the attempted murders of the other two victims. All four suspects were subsequently held at the Caddo Correctional Center.
