In the late summer of 2021, the life of 31-year-old Horace Sparks was tragically cut short by gun violence in Shreveport, Louisiana. On the evening of August 14th, Sparks was fatally shot, becoming another victim in a city grappling with violent crime. The incident that claimed Sparks' life set in motion an investigation by the Shreveport Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit.
In the weeks that followed the shooting, investigators worked to piece together the events that led to Sparks'
death. Their efforts culminated in a significant breakthrough in early September. On September 8, 2021, members of the Shreveport Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit, with the assistance of the US Marshal's Violent Offender's Task Force, located and apprehended a suspect in the 1800 block of North Market. Following interviews with investigators, the individual was booked into the Shreveport City Jail.
The investigation also led to charges against other individuals in connection with a related case. On August 19, 2021, the Northwest Louisiana Crime Lab linked three other men, Jaylen Burns, Libert Burns, and Tarus Walton, to a separate homicide. They were each charged with one count of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder. The suspect arrested on September 8th was also implicated in this separate incident and was booked on warrants for both that homicide and the murder of Horace Sparks.
