The sole suspect in the shooting was his girlfriend, Ebonie Hartwell. In her statement to investigators, Hartwell admitted to shooting Stanley. She recounted a volatile evening that began with an argument in their car as they were returning from a club. According to Hartwell, the argument escalated, and Stanley exited the vehicle at some point before she arrived home. He later appeared at her residence to retrieve his keys from her car.
Hartwell claimed that when she opened the front door, Stanley became aggressive and pushed past her to enter the home. She told deputies that she then attempted to choke him to make him leave. The confrontation culminated with Hartwell grabbing a handgun and firing at Stanley from inside the house while he was standing outside. Following the investigation into the events of that night, the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office arrested Ebonie Hartwell. She was subsequently booked on a charge of second-degree murder.
