In the spring of 2022, the life of 17-year-old Markeith Franklin Jr., a male resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was tragically cut short. On the evening of Friday, March 18, 2022, Franklin, affectionately known as 'JR' by his loved ones, was fatally shot. The incident occurred around 7:35 p.m. on Scotland Avenue, just east of Scenic Highway.
Earlier that evening, Franklin had left his home with friends. He was sitting in a car with three of them when the shooting took place.
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, his friends brought him back home with a gunshot wound. His mother, Chenetra Washington, discovered a wound in his chest and desperately tried to save him. Emergency services were called, and Franklin was transported to a local hospital for treatment, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear. According to Franklin's mother, a group of young men armed with guns had come to their house looking for her son on the morning of the shooting. The Baton Rouge Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide, but at the time of the initial reports, they had not identified any suspects or a reason for the violent act.
In the wake of her son's death, Chenetra Washington made a public plea for anyone with information to come forward and help bring justice for her son.
